‘Turkey working on nuclear energy’

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said yesterday Turkey was working on nuclear energy issues and having talks with U.S., Canadian, British and German officials on the subject.
“It is not possible for us to approach nuclear energy positively if it is to be used to produce weapons of mass destruction, but if it is to be used for peaceful means we must say nobody has the right to have a say on this,” Erdoğan said during a meeting within the framework of the annual World Economic Forum in Egypt.
Erdoğan said during the meeting that tens of countries were using nuclear energy today.
“Everyone uses nuclear energy, but the case is different if nuclear energy is used to produce weapons of mass destruction,” Erdoğan said.
In response to a question from a participant of the meeting asking whether Turkey would help with dialogue with Iran, Erdoğan said he had met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad twice in May.
Erdoğan and Ahmedinejad first met in Baku on the margins of an annual summit of the 10-nation Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) group earlier this month and then in Bali, where the two attended the summit of the Developing 8 (D -8).
Erdoğan said he told the Iranian leader during their meetings in both Baku and Bali that political dialogue and diplomatic approaches to existing problems were very important.
“If Iran and international organizations including the U.N. Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ask Turkey to play a role in dialogue, we'll undertake it,” he said.
Erdoğan was expected to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres yesterday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. Erdoğan also had talks with Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, Turkish secretary-general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
